Growing up on a farm we had this plant we called Milk Weed....I know now it was a Milk Thistle. Milk Thistle blooms have sweet nectar... they attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and finches...who knew? I just thought they were a prickly weed.
The blooms of thistles are very pretty when in full bloom. Nevertheless, I consider them a troublesome weed. In the Fall they mature...the bloom dries turns to seed, soon afterward the pod opens, there are a multitude of little hairy seeds that I always referred to as fairies growing up that will soon take their flight. Once the Fall blustery wind catches the open pod the fairies begin to soar!
This morning while reading my devotion the Milk Weed came to mind...friendship has characteristics of a thistle. Most would say... what? You see thistles have sharp prickles. Now most would think that is a bad friendship...not! The best friend will tell you the truth. Sometimes the truth is like a prick of a thistle it hurts. I've always been told if you have one true friend then you are very blessed.
Christ is [everyone's] my true friend... he sticks closer than a brother. His word gives me truth that will never fail.
Hebrews 4:12 The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword...wow! God's word can prick also.
I'm thankful for my Thistle [Milk] Weed friends!
Proverbs 18:24 King James Version
24 A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
