Christmas! Oh the thoughts that go through my head. All the things that are associated with Christmas makes me either smile, or say shoo-wee. Candy canes, eggnog, fruitcake, orange slice wax candy, nuts, oranges, apple cider, chocolate covered cherries, and hot chocolate are some of the things that were always part of Christmas at our house.
One that I remember well is the dreaded fruitcake reveal...either you love fruitcake or you loathe it. I tried my best to like it. I would always get a piece and pick out the parts I thought I could eat (or attempt to eat) and leave the remainder. Nope, not happening. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't acquire a taste for it.
Christmas movies, Christmas lights, Christmas trees, Christmas wreaths-- oh the joy! Reindeer, sleighs, sleds, ginormous snowmen, and ugly sweaters. Christmas stockings hung in the location Santa would visit. Poinsettia's, mistletoe, tinsel, fake snow sprayed in the windows, and glass ornaments on the tree. Who remembers?
Then all the songs we would sing around the piano. One we would sing always every single year--The Twelve Days of Christmas. We would divide up into twelve groups. Just singing--nope! So much more was required than bellowing out the lyrics, you had to act out the part as well. Oh the laughs! Oh the memories from years past. A more simple, joyful era.
Adult and children Christmas plays. So many weeks of practice to learn our parts, all the heartfelt meaningful songs. Rain, snow, sleet, or shine we hung in there until the end. No quitting! Kids bickered, cried, and pouted! However, five minutes later they were laughing, jumping, singing like nothing ever happened.
Germs--yes germs they were everywhere. Kids with colds, snotty noses, one year an outbreak of chicken pox, strep, and the dreaded stomach flu. So many germy memories! Yikes! Nevertheless, we stayed the course.
Christmas--Jesus birthday! That's what these Christmas things are about. All these things are because of a babe born in Bethlehem. You see? God sent his son so that we could experience the miracle of Christmas. All these things were created or experienced because of HIM. "HE" is our Christmas spirit!
Love, joy, and peace!
Happy Birthday Jesus! You are truly the only reason for the season.
Luke 2:11-14
"For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."
